The Dewey Decimal Classification is the most widely used library classification in the world. It uses a numbered hierarchical system based on structure and notation. These numbers are what we call call numbers. Each item in the library is given a call number that will tell you where the item is located.
There are ten major subject divisions in the Dewey Decimal Classification. These are further divided into subsections. For example, the call number 600 can be divided into the following:600 Technology & Applied Sciences
